Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) – an explanation

Although many people have heard of NLP or, Neuro-Linguistic Programming to give it its full name, far fewer know what it is and how it works. In this section, I aim to shed some light on this transformative mind therapy that I often use alongside hypnosis.

I’m Paul Haynes, a clinical hypnotherapist and NLP practitioner working in Chester, Manchester, and London. I also work online with Zoom or Skype.

We take the very best of what people do, synthesise it down, make it learnable and share it with each other – and that is what the real future of what NLP will be and its gonna stay that way!

What is Neuro-Linguistic Programming?

Neuro-Linguistic Programming or NLP for short, is a talking therapy that was developed in the 1970’s by Professor John Grinder and Dr Richard Bandler.

You can think of it as the science of how to communicate with the unconscious.

Many therapists use NLP on its own or with other therapies, and it is often used alongside Hypnotherapy because they work so well together.  NLP is also used in a wide range of fields, such as sports performance, sales and marketing, business communication, and education.

How did it begin?

Neuro-Linguistic Programming began in 1976 when the founders Grindler and Bandler conducted research to determine why some therapists and therapies were more successful than others.

They closely studied a group of notable therapists who consistently achieved exceptional results with their clients.  Their main focus was to identify the commonalities between these therapists and their techniques.  Based on their findings, they constructed a model of excellence that explains how the unconscious mind operates and the most effective methods of communicating with it.

Why use NLP?

NLP has come a long way since the early days when Grindler and Bandler modelled their initial version of the unconscious. Over the last four decades, NLP practitioners have gained a body of in-depth knowledge of how the unconscious works and developed a range of techniques that involve the use of our imagination, emotions, and memories to bring about rapid changes in our behaviours, feelings, and beliefs.

One of the advantages of working with NLP techniques is their ability to consistently produce results, often very quickly.  For issues like phobias and habits, often only one or two sessions are needed when using NLP.

NLP provides a fantastic array of tools and methods for working with clients, but they are not appropriate or necessary for every issue.  During each consultation, I will discuss and assess which techniques and methods are most appropriate for each client and their stage along the healing journey.
