Habits and Addictions

Habits and addictions are repeated ways of behaving over which we have no control. Habits include such things as: nail-biting, teeth-grinding and hair-pulling. Common addictions are alcohol, smoking, drugs, soda drinks, chocolate and gambling.

Addicts will experience withdrawal symptoms if they stop their addictive behaviour.These symptoms can range from headaches, anxiety, irritability, nausea and obsessive and overwhelming thoughts about the addictive behaviour.

Obsessive Compulsive disorder (OCD) is another type of habitual or compulsive behaviour which is often related to the need to control one’s environment because of irrational fears about cleanliness and hygiene.

How can Hypnosis and NLP help with habits or addictions?

Every habit or addictive behaviour has been learned - you were not born with it - and there will always be triggers or situations which trigger the repeated behaviour. There will also be an emotional component to the habit or addiction and sometimes there maybe underlying trauma which caused behaviour to start, as a way of coping.

Habitual and addictive behaviours have their origins in the unconscious mind. This means that although we learn the habit or behaviour initially with our conscious mind - we are aware of what we are doing and can stop at any time - eventually, when the behaviour is repeated many times, it becomes habitual and automatic and we are no longer in control of it.

With Hypnotherapy and NLP I am able to reprogram your subconscious mind so that you can let go of habits with ease in 1-3 sessions. By becoming aware of the triggers for the habit and then breaking the associative response to the stimulus, you can quite quickly unlearn most habitual behaviours. This includes smoking, habitual drinking, nail biting, teeth grinding, and hair pulling.

Addictive behaviours are more complex and I encourage all clients who come to me for help with addiction to use my services alongside other support therapies such as the 12-Step program. However if a person is ready to change then Hypnotherapy and NLP can be very effective in helping an addict along the road to recovery. Research has shown that using hypnosis with a Twelve Step Program results in a 87% success rate.
